About the CA-COM NL8 NL4 Speaker Tester

It happens all of the time, audio lines are connected to the speakers on motors or truss, flown into the air, cables are dressed, picked, and routed all the way to the amps before power is even turned on.

Oftentimes the first time you hear that speaker is some time after the cables have been run, after the point you could easily swap out a bad cable.

This speaker tester was designed out of a need to test speakers and cables before power is run in the venue and even before the PA even gets plugged into the amplifiers.

This AA battery powered unit has a small built-in audio amplifier with two modes and 4 speaker circuits.

The first mode is Pink Noise, an industry standard for testing speaker cabinets. The second mode is a tone sweep from 20 Hz to 20 kHz over 5 seconds and repeats.

Both modes on the speaker tester can be turned on and off for all 4 speaker circuits on the CA-COM and Speakon NL8, and 2 speaker circuits on the Speakon NL4. If you are testing a powered speaker, you can use the XLR Output and get either mode as well.

The tone sweep allows you to quickly hear if any speaker components are broken or out of polarity with each other. Or you can use the Pink Noise and listen to the full range at the same time.

This product’s CA-COM output has been tested on L’Acoustics K-Series like the K1, K2 and K3.

The NL4 connector has been tested on L’Acoustics K-Series (Kara II, Kara, Kiva II, and Kiva), L’Acoustics S-Series (Syva, Syva Low, and Syva Sub), L’Acoustics A-Series (A15 and A10), L’Acoustics X-Series (X15-HiQ, X12, X8 and 5XT) and L’Acoustics Subwoofers (KS28, KS21, SB28, SB18 and SB15).

The speaker tester is powered off of 3 AA batteries accessible by removing 4 phillips screws. A fresh set of AA batteries lasts for several hours of testing, and most find that they can go 2 months of shows before needing to change batteries.

The robust casing is a Diecast Aluminum NEMA Enclosure with black coating with all black Neutrik connectors for the XLR, NL4 and NL8. The CA-COM is a Syntax SPK 8-Pin connector found on L’Acoustics amplifiers and cabinets, so all of the typical CA-COM cables used for flying the big stuff, will mate up with this speaker tester.

There is a white power LED that illuminates when the tester is turned on. It is bright enough to use as a flashlight when at the back of amplifier racks to help you plug in cables and see what you are doing.
